Apart from conducting trainings for prison inmates on making Agarbathi, Phenoyl and Mat Weaving through September, 2016, Puthiya Nambikkai—Sri Aurobindo Society’s Prison Reformation initiative in Puducherry and Aravind Eye Hospital organized a one-day eye camp on September 27, 2016. The camp at Central Prison in Kalapet, Puducherry, benefited 56 people which included 37 Convicted Inmates, 9 Undertrials and 10 Prison Police.
The team was led by Dr. Prateek, camp organizer Mr. Thiruvengadam and other Paramedical staff of Aravind Eye Hospital, Puducherry. Mr. Bhaskaran, Superintendent of Central Prison, provided all the necessary support during the camp.
Following the camp, the doctor prescribed spectacles to 19 Inmates. The spectacles will be handed over to the inmates in October 2016. The Inmates, Prison Police thanked Sri Aurobindo Society and Aravind Eye Hospital for organizing the camp of this magnitude with such thoughtfulness which would be highly beneficial to them.
Meanwhile, 10 inmates have been trained on making Phenoyl and 7 on making Agarbathis. So far, 50 the inmates have already made 50 bottles of Phenoyl. Plans are afoot to soon teach Spoken English to all the prison inmates, besides enrolling them in Vocational Training Courses on Diesel or Auto Mechanic.
