Yoga asanas were part of this year’s Independence Day celebrations demonstrated by the prisoners at Central Prison in Puducherry. Independence Day celebrations are conducted every year at this prison, but this year’s yoga demonstration was special as it far surpassed everyone’s expectations and appreciated by all those watching. Twenty inmates, who regularly attend our yoga sessions, did asanas in front of the Inspector General of Police and Chief Superintendent of Police, Puducherry, and both paid rich compliments to the prisoners.
We started Yoga Classes in July in 2016 as a part of our rehabilitation efforts for the convicted inmates of Central Prison. Initially 20 inmates attended the training which was conducted every morning for an hour. Mr. Neelakandan, who works at Swami Vivekananda Rural Community College, Chettikalam and is a yoga expert, conducts the training.
