A two-day Management Development Programme—‘Inner Choice: How to Make a Right Decision’—was conducted for the Senior Managers of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (HPCL) at their Management Development Institute at Nigdi, Pune. The MDP was organized on June 25 and 26, 2015, by Professor Saikat Sen, Director, Sri Aurobindo Foundation for Integral Management (SAFIM), Centre of Excellence in Management of Sri Aurobindo Society, Puducherry.
Decision-making is perhaps the essence of management or managerial competence. The effectiveness of a manager depends largely on his ability to take the right decision and successfully implement it. But there is not much clarity in modern management thought on what is precisely the right decision and how to arrive at it. The old traditional management depended heavily on reason and external tools like quantitative methods and computer.
However, at present, there is a growing recognition of the ‘bounded rationality’ of human consciousness and the limitation of external tools. The complexity of the business environment and needs of the hypercompetitive corporate landscape is becoming too difficult to manage for human reason and its technological tools. The need for intuition is now given its due recognition and appreciation in the new management thought.
These higher intuitive faculties can give a holistic insight into the complete truth of each decision-making situation and therefore help us to arrive at the truly right decision. The Indian Yoga can provide the practical methods for consciously awakening these intuitive faculties within us.
In this workshop, step-by-step methods were suggested and practiced at the individual and collective level. In various sessions, the participants analyzed case studies on intuitive decision making and decision making through inner guidance. Reflective exercises helped them to understand about their inner self and the process of how to connect with it. The interactive exercises also helped all the participants to communicate and connect with the facilitator. They were able to chalk out a future action plan about how they would implement this new approach in their regular corporate functions.
